How much does a fence cost in Stockton?
Updated October 2026
As of October 2026, most home fences in the Stockton area cost about $10 to $55 per linear foot installed, based on published cost guides. Wood and vinyl land in the middle and ornamental metal at the top. Farm wire on long, open runs costs far less per foot. It depends on height, gates, soil, access and whether an old fence comes out first, so a measured written quote is the real figure.
What does each type of fence cost per foot in Stockton?
| Fence type | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Barbed or woven field wire, long open runs | A couple of dollars, before gates and bracing |
| Horse-safe wire or wood post-and-rail | About $12 to $35 for post-and-rail |
| Pipe or heavy panel corral | About $13.50 to $40 |
| Chain link (farm or commercial only in Stockton) | About $10 to $30 |
| Wood, 4 to 6 ft | About $20 to $45 |
| Vinyl | About $25 to $55 |
| Aluminum | About $20 to $60 |
| Wrought iron or tubular steel | About $30 to $85 |
These are national and regional published ranges. Few sources publish Stockton-only pricing, so treat the table as a planning range, not a quote.
Why is chain link marked "farm or commercial only"?
Stockton's Development Code does not allow chain link in residential districts. If you were counting on chain link as the cheap option for a city home, plan on wood or vinyl instead. See the chain link guide.
What does a gate add to the price?
As of October 2026, published guides list a basic walk gate at roughly $400 to $2,000 installed and a driveway or security gate at roughly $2,000 to $12,000. Wide farm gates on heavy posts and automatic openers sit toward the upper end. See gates.
What pushes a Stockton fence price up or down?
- Height. Going from 6 to 8 feet in a rear yard adds material and, over 7 feet, a building permit.
- Soil and water. Wet clay, high winter groundwater and tree roots near the river mean deeper or wider footings.
- Corners and gates. On farm fencing especially, every corner and gate needs a braced assembly.
- Old fence removal. Tearing out and hauling a worn fence is usually its own line item.
- Access. Narrow side yards and backyard-only access slow the job.
- Material grade. Cedar over pine, heavy vinyl over light, steel posts over wood.
Which fence is the best value?
Wood if…
you want a full privacy fence in town for the least money and can stain it every year or two.
Vinyl if…
sprinklers soak the fence line or you never want to paint, and you plan to stay a while.
Metal if…
you want a taller, secure front fence; decorative steel gets more height in Stockton's front setback.
Field wire if…
you are enclosing acreage for livestock and need the lowest cost per foot.
How should I compare fence quotes in Stockton?
Ask each contractor for a written, itemized quote listing posts, footings, materials, gates, removal and any permit work. In California, any job of $1,000 or more in labor and materials requires a contractor licensed by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), and the board has a specific C-13 Fencing classification. You can look up any license on the CSLB website. Related: Stockton height limits.
